Making her mark for the betterment of society

Alma Ludivina Aguado(D) works as a solo practitioner in internal medicine in the underserved southwest area of San Antonio, Texas. As a physician, it is Aguado’s nature to care for others, and being a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senator is expanding that characteristic on a broader level. This doctor, business owner and mother of two believe legislation needs to be steered in a new direction, and she’s ready to lead Texas on a new course.

Former years
Aguado, a first generation Mexican-American was born in Eagle Pass, Texas in December 1962. The oldest of three children, she was an intelligent child and was gifted in math and science. Her father, Edmundo Aguado, was a janitor in a hospital in Piedras Negras, Mexico. Her mother, Guadalupe Lopez, was a housewife who later finished her nurse’s aid education to help Aguado enter medical school.

Aguado was raised in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, where her family lived with little means. Their household was very poor, considerably lower than the poverty level because they didn’t have basic necessities, like indoor plumbing, electricity or a telephone. Though times were tough, the Aguados made the best of things and always encouraged each other to succeed.

Professional credentials
Dr. Aguado graduated from medical school at the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in 1986. She completed her internship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and her internal medicine residency at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas.

The doctor Fascinated with the Genome Project performed one of her two research projects in Nuclear Somatic Transference at Scott and White Hospital.

Dr. Aguado also taught medicine before starting her private practice. She worked at a veteran’s hospital in Temple, Texas as an assistant professor for Texas A&M University.

Dr. Aguado is a member of the American Medical Association, the National Resources Defense Council, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Texas Medical Association and the Bexar County Medical Society.

Family life
Dr. Aguado came to United States when she graduated from medical school at age 22 to learn English as a second language. While she was attending college in Uvalde, Texas she met Thomas Dawson, whom she married in April 1988. They had two children, Marjorie, 19, and Thomas, 13. Dr. Aguado divorced after 10 years of marriage, and is now raising her son, while her daughter, Marjorie a singer and songwriter, thleudron.com attends Berkley College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Both children are the product of Texas State public education.

Matters of importance
There are a number of topics close to Dr. Aguado’s heart, and through her skill as a painter, she expresses those thoughts in her pieces. With more than 300 pieces of art in her portfolio, she relays the troubles we face and depicts the mood of our society through colorful images. As an advocate for environmental preservation, most of her artwork encompasses nature as a theme.
